Re: Buy Yourself a REAL Hummer!
Tue, November 2, 2004 - 1:49 PMWell, the ultimate in cool would be to run it on biodiesel--most diesel vehicles can, especially ones with heavy-duty engines like the military issue Hummer. -

Fri, May 6, 2005 - 5:23 PMThat's not a real hummer. This is a real hummer.

You can shoot that with an M-16 and still be okay. -

Re: Buy Yourself a REAL Hummer!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 11:57 AMthe problem is, the Hummer was never intended to be an armored vehicle, and the Hummer armor upgrade kit is actually a higher threat level than that...
thing is, an M-16 is a fucking popgun, and the main Threat forces use AK-series weapons, which fire a bigger, heavier bullet than the M-16.
the HMMWV is not an armored car and was never intended to be one. It's a big Jeep or a small Ma Deuce and that's about all it is. The armor is a combat-expedient when a vehicle designed for behind-the-lines use was introduced to a war that doesn't have behind-the-lines areas. The Jeep had no armor--if they were lucky they had a canvas top.
Interesting HMMWV news: the military is working on a hybrid HMMVW:

It is intended for infiltration missions, and any time you can drop fuel consumption of a vehicle you lengthen your potential supply chain. Interesting idea... -

Re: Buy Yourself a REAL Hummer!
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 9:23 PMYeah but the M16 fires a .223 caliber with the same powder as the AK firing a .30 cal. [ Approximate ] So you got a more pointy bullet with a higher velocity and would tend to penetrate things like car doors and body armor better.
Iraq is NOT the new Vietnam it is more like Belfast. What the English did in Northern Ireland is keep the Land-rovers stock and put the troops in body armor / flack jackets. They found the visibility factor key. Tactic was when fired upon stop [ Or RUN depending.] everyone bail out and return the fire. Even an un armored Humvee is fairly good cover if they have to shoot thru both sides to hit you. I think the English used sandbags on the floorboards for bombs as well.
Support our troops bring them HOME. NOW . -

Re: Buy Yourself a REAL Hummer!
Tue, November 29, 2005 - 2:13 AMDamage to a target in foot-pounds tends to be a result of velocity x mass. Higher velocity with smaller mass equals about the same delivered kinetic energy as slightly lower velocity and slightly higher mass, and the difference of .08" doesn't really make much difference in terms of penetration when using standard ball ammo. Although it's kind of moot because most modern AKs, ones of the AK74 pattern, fire a 5.45x39mm round that is ballistically even more similar to the 5.56mm round.
